Kg Baru prefers Khalid

KAMPUNG Baru residents have put their faith in Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim rather than Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ab Hakim Borhan for the development of the historic township.

At a dialogue session held between the residents and Abdul Khalid at Sultan Sulaiman Club yesterday, the residents made it clear that they wanted Kampung Baru to be governed under Selangor like in previous times, and not under the jurisdiction of Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

About 300-odd residents attended the hour-long dialogue, organised by the Titiwangsa MP’s office in an effort to gain public support in making objections to the Draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020.

Aside from Abdul Khalid, also present at the dialogue to address issues raised by residents included Titiwangsa MP Dr Lo’lo’ Mohd Ghazali and Selangor Task Force on Land Management chairman Datuk Nik Mohd Zain.

Most of the issues raised were from landowners who were concerned about their land status, be it freehold or leashold, if City Hall puts the proposed KL Draft Plan for Kampung Baru into action.

Others expressed their wish for a Kampung Baru Development Corporation to be established so that their own people — residents who are industry professionals — could govern the township.

Abdul Khalid said residents must unite to safeguard the Malay enclave. The 220 acres of Kampung Baru is estimated to be worth over RM5 billion, but only if wholly maintained, he said.

“It is important for all landowners and residents to achieve a common ground in objecting to the KL Draft Plan. Your lands are only worth a lot as a whole,” he told residents.

“If you (landowners) decide to fight for your land as individuals, your chances of winning is going to be very, very slim.”

Abdul Khalid said he felt responsible to help the people of Kampung Baru as the area was once a part of Selangor before Kuala Lumpur was taken over by the Federal Government in 1974.

He said on his part, he would set up a team comprising town and country planning experts from the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) as well as provide RM50,000 to research various issues concerning the development of the land.
